We saw the whale shark on Tuesday, August 28th, it was on our second dive. We were in about 40-50 feet of water, right off the crater on Lehua Rock, if you have a map I can point it out to you. Our boat captain remarked when we got back into Poipu that the current was picking up from Kauai's south shore and heading out toward Ni'ihau, and he said the two other times in his twenty-year long career in Kauai he has seen a whale shark the current was also picking up in a similar fashion. Our captain believed the whale shark was just drifting along in the current. Certainly when we saw the whale shark, it was swimming by so incredibly slowly it was as if time stopped. It was in no rush, and looked at us very clearly the entire time it was in our presence. I'd be happy to talk more about it if you'd like, I'm fascinated by your project and by whale sharks in general. I have never seen another creature that looks so unique, and I thought I would never see one until much later on in my life.
