Additional comments:
The encounter with this animal occured at the exact location of a previous sighting some 5 weeks earlier. One diver was present on both occasions and believes it to have been the same individual.
The shark remained with us for approximately 10 minutes before leaving, at depths of between 16 and 24 metres. It did not appear to be feeding (mouth unopened). The estimate of length I believe is fairly accurate as I was able to compare it to other divers. I did not even think to check it's sex - sorry. I also apologise for the quality of photographs but hope they may be still of some use.
I am a divemaster with some 1200 dives around the Phi Phi Islands, Thailand. This is only my second encounter with whalesharks, the previous one being 3 years ago, although I do of course hear of most sightings from the area. If I can be of any assisatance to your organisation please do not hesitate to contact me.
