Upon examination of your picture, it is worth noting that this whale shark exhibits traces of a serious injury.
As with sea cows, manatees and dugongs, these slow moving creatures are very prone to be hit by a boat's motor.
There are seven prop slashes spreading from the top of its head all the way to even its gills, and one long motor's skeg slash that runs over them and through its back.
This is a serious injury. I dare to say that something like this would have killed a young specimen.
The rather excessive amount of remoras attached to its skin tempts me to think that it is probably due to the extend, and as a result of this injury. Infection from the wounds could have compromise its entire immune system allowing other rather insignificant infections and or parasites to have the opportunity to spread, leaving more food available for the remoras.
This whale shark is still recovering from this injury otherwise the remoras would not be as many. This whale shark might still be in danger.
